The German Interior Minister, Alexander Dobrindt, has directly blamed Russia for the attempted bombing with drones loaded with explosives recorded last month at the Leipzig airport, in the east of the country, after authorities located several of these devices in the vicinity of Ukrainian planes.
In a joint appearance with the Foreign Minister, Johann Wadephul, Dobrindt detailed that the investigations carried out by the security services indicate that the method of execution of the attack, including the components of the drones and the technology used for their detonation, conclusively matches the methods used by Moscow to carry out operations in the context of the war in Ukraine.
"We do not consider Leipzig an isolated incident, but we see it in conjunction with other hybrid actions," Dobrindt indicated, also emphasizing that "Germany is not at war," although it is a "daily target" of these "hybrid" attacks attributed to Moscow.
Wadephul has announced that the German government will close the Russian consulate general in Bonn starting September 18, will terminate the contract of the House of Russia in Berlin, and will summon the Russian ambassador to formally express its protest.
Furthermore, the Foreign Minister pointed out that they will propose to the European Union the creation of a new 'blacklist' of Russian citizens linked to hybrid actions and has indicated that the government will tighten entry controls for people coming from Russia.
Dobrindt had already framed these events at the beginning of August in a "hybrid attack scenario" after visiting the airport and ruling out that it was an "amateur action," after investigators found an undetonated drone next to a Ukrainian transport plane of the Antonov model.
The Leipzig airport is considered a key point for the transit of weapons, also destined for the Ukrainian front. Since the beginning of the Russian invasion, the number of sightings and reconnaissance missions with drones over critical infrastructure and military targets has increased in Germany.
