The president of Brazil, Lula da Silva, has assured this Friday that "the world is full of crazy people" and has cited as an example the imperialist aspirations that he attributes to his US counterpart, Donald Trump, in relation to Greenland and his supposed interest in controlling the Panama Canal.

"The world is full of crazy people. Right now, Trump wants to take Greenland, for Canada to become one of his states, he wants to take the Panama Canal," Lula has stated, announcing that the reinforcement of national defense will be one of the central pillars of his program for the upcoming October elections this year.

"For the first time, I am going to place the issue of defense in the national program," the Brazilian leader indicated during the ceremony for the delivery of a new frigate to the Navy, held in the state of Santa Catarina.

In this regard, Lula has stressed that, although he does not wish for a war conflict, he also does not want to be "caught by surprise," according to information disseminated by the local press.

The head of state recalled that most of the oil and gas exploration in Brazil takes place offshore and insisted on the need to protect these resources. "Now we are going to find oil in the equatorial belt and there will be a lot of oil, God willing, and we need to defend ourselves," he concluded.
