At least one person has lost their life and another 89 have been injured after the collision of two trains in the vicinity of the British town of Bedford, in the center of the country, as confirmed by the authorities.
The Deputy Commissioner of the British Transport Police, Stuart Cundy, has reported the incident in statements collected by the Sky News channel, after ordering a "large deployment" of emergency services to what he described as a "serious incident".
"We are working quickly to clarify what happened and will provide more information as soon as possible," added the police official.
The East of England Ambulance Service has indicated for now that 89 injured have been counted, of whom eleven are in "very serious" condition and have been evacuated to different hospitals, while another 56 people have "minor" injuries.
To attend to the emergency, more than 20 ambulances, several specialized teams, and six medical helicopters have been mobilized, the emergency service detailed.
The collision occurred south of the Elstow junction, according to information provided by the railway company and collected by the newspaper "The Guardian".
