A minor has died and two others have been critically injured this Friday afternoon after an accident at sea in the rocky area of l'Arrabassada beach, in Tarragona, as confirmed by the Medical Emergency System (SEM).
The incident occurred when a group of six minors had difficulty getting out of the water in the area known as Cova del Gos, a rocky area where three of them managed to return to shore on their own, while the other three were trapped.
Extensive rescue operation
The alert was received around 3:30 PM, after which an emergency operation was activated with six ambulances, a medicalized helicopter, and several maritime units.
The jet skis from Maritime Rescue managed to locate two of the minors, who were rescued alive but transferred in critical condition to the Joan XXIII hospital in Tarragona.
The third minor was located later by the emergency helicopter, which could only confirm his death and proceed to transfer him to shore.
The operation also involved the Mossos d'Esquadra, the Bombers de la Generalitat, the Civil Guard, and the Local Police, in addition to a psychological support team from the SEM.
Institutional consternation
The president of the Generalitat, Salvador Illa, expressed his consternation on social media and conveyed his support to the family of the deceased minor.
Illa also thanked the emergency teams for their swift intervention in rescuing the affected minors.
Authorities are continuing investigations to clarify the exact circumstances of the accident, while the two hospitalized minors remain in critical condition under intensive medical care.
