The Prime Minister of Pakistan, Shehbaz Sharif, stated this Monday during a meeting with the President of Iran, Masud Pezeshkian, that the agreement sealed between the United States and Iran last June constitutes "the only viable path to lasting peace."
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, which is being held in Kyrgyzstan. In this context, Sharif recalled that the recent visit to Tehran by the head of the Pakistani Armed Forces, Asim Munir, to reactivate diplomatic contacts "was a good omen" for consolidating regional stability.
According to details provided by the office of the Pakistani Prime Minister, during the meeting Sharif "emphasized the importance of moderation and maintaining sustained diplomatic dialogue to achieve lasting peace and stability in the region." At the same time, he stressed "the need to advance based on the understandings reached under the memorandum of understanding from Islamabad."
Sharif remarked that "this offers the only viable path to lasting peace in the region," referring to the agreement signed between the United States and Iran in June, in which Islamabad acted as a mediator.
For his part, the Iranian president valued the constructive role played by Pakistan in the talks and reiterated the Islamic Republic's willingness to implement what was agreed, as long as Washington fully respects the commitments made.
Pezeshkian also emphasized that "sustainable peace and security in the region will not be achieved without the cooperation and empathy of the countries in the region and without foreign intervention."
