The former Bosnian Serb commander Ratko Mladic, popularly known as "the butcher of Bosnia" and sentenced in November 2017 for war crimes and crimes against humanity committed during the Bosnian War (1992-1995), has died this Thursday at the age of 84 in a prison in The Hague.
Mladic — sentenced to life imprisonment by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) after being found guilty of ten charges, including genocide in Srebrenica — had suffered several strokes during his time in prison.
His family had requested the court to allow him to receive medical care in Serbia, a request recently supported by Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic. However, Mladic has died this Thursday, according to information released by the Serbian public television network RTS.
