British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is spending this weekend in a delicate moment of reflection with his family at the official country residence of Chequers, amid growing speculation about the possibility that this Monday, after weeks of internal pressure—including from several ministers—he will end up giving in and announcing his resignation.
The Labour Party's debacle in the recent municipal elections, coupled with the return to the forefront of his main internal adversary and potential successor, Andy Burnham, has almost completely deteriorated Starmer's political position. According to the British channel Sky News, citing its own sources, Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper reportedly became the latest cabinet member on Sunday to suggest the prime minister step down.
In a previous interview with the same channel, Business Secretary Peter Kyle denied that Starmer's resignation was imminent. "I have no reason to believe that they are true," he declared, although he did admit that the Labour leader "is taking his time to reflect on the political realities, challenges, and opportunities."
According to sources consulted by Sky News, ministers Heidi Alexander (Transport) and Shabana Mahmood (Home Affairs), as well as Energy Secretary Ed Miliband, would also have urged Starmer to step aside and leave Downing Street.
Meanwhile, Starmer maintains strict public silence and is limiting himself to staying with his loved ones at Chequers. His only appearance has been on social media, where he posted a brief Father's Day message. "Being a father is my greatest joy. Today, I'm thinking of my dad, and the father I am to my children thanks to him. Happy Father's Day," he stated.
