The highest responsible for the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), Mazloum Abdi, communicated this Tuesday the official dissolution of the Kurdish-Arab militia as an "independent military force." This step is framed within the integration agreement signed at the end of January with the Syrian transitional president, Ahmed al Shara.
"After the agreement with President Al Shara and once the integration of our forces into the brigades of the Syrian Army is completed, we announce today the end of the mission of the Syrian Democratic Forces and declare, with full responsibility, their dissolution as an independent military force," he stated at a press conference held at the Syrian Presidency headquarters in Damascus.
The issue of the integration of the SDF into the military structures of Damascus was one of the most delicate points, due to the discrepancies between the parties regarding how to carry it out. All of this occurred in a context of pressures and calls from the United States in favor of the Syrian government, insisting that it maintain control over the entirety of the territory and rejecting the consolidation of any formula of autonomy under the leadership of the Kurdish authorities.
