The President of the United States, Donald Trump, has sent to Congress the nuclear cooperation agreement with Saudi Arabia announced on July 23, insisting that its implementation is contingent upon Riyadh joining the Abraham Accords, the series of agreements sponsored by Washington to normalize relations between Israel and several Arab states, such as the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain.
According to a Trump Administration official who spoke to Europa Press, the text, primarily drafted by the Department of Energy, was sent to the legislative chamber this Monday as part of what is provided by the Atomic Energy Act.
The same source emphasized that "the president's position has not changed in that the agreement will only move forward if Saudi Arabia adheres to the Abraham Accords," a condition that the occupant of the White House had already expressed the day after Secretary of Energy Chris Wright made the commitment public.
At that time, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu highlighted the "historic advance" for peace in the Middle East that, in his opinion, the incorporation of Saudi Arabia into the diplomatic initiative promoted by Washington would represent.
The Abraham Accords encompass the normalization processes between Israel and the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Morocco, and Sudan — the latter still pending ratification — which add to the existing peace agreements between Israel and other Arab countries, such as Jordan and Egypt, all of which were concluded during Trump's first term.
