The Ministry of Defense has launched an internal investigation into the incident that, according to the Spanish Troop and Navy Association (ATME), occurred on May 21 in one of the shooting ranges at the Madrid base of El Goloso, during a training session in which personnel from the 'Asturias' Infantry Regiment number 31 were participating.

Sources from the department headed by Margarita Robles have confirmed to Europa Press the opening of these investigations after ATME released a statement warning of "contradictions" in the account of what happened and demanding that all aspects related to this episode be clarified.

According to the data provided by ATME, while the soldiers were performing "dry firing" while waiting for their turn to fire live ammunition, "two involuntary shots" would have been registered, one of which could have "hit or grazed the face of one of the soldiers who, at that moment, were patching targets and collecting casings on the firing line."

The association has formally requested the Ministry to send it a detailed report in writing with all the details of the incident, the number of injured personnel, their current situation, the safety measures planned before and during the training, as well as "any incident detected in their compliance."

"Transparency in these types of situations is essential to guarantee the safety of personnel and the correct application of training and instruction procedures," emphasize ATME, which considers that this case, like many others that do not become public, once again demonstrates that a military career is "a risky activity."

In this context, the group takes the opportunity to reiterate its demand that the condition of a risky profession be recognized for both personnel included in the general Social Security regime and those belonging to passive classes and temporary military personnel who, upon concluding their commitment, reintegrate into civilian life.
