United Left (IU) has requested the Prosecutor's Office of Democratic Memory to intervene to prevent the repetition of an event that is held every year in the Madrid town of Majadahonda and that the formation defines as "Francoist exaltation."
The request refers to the tribute scheduled for January 10 to Ion Mota and Vasile Marin, Romanian volunteers who fought alongside the rebel side in the Civil War of 1936, and which traditionally takes place at the so-called 'Monument to the fallen Romanian legionaries,' located on a property of supposed private ownership in that Madrid municipality.
The parliamentary spokesperson for IU, Enrique Santiago, and the legal coordinator of the party, Juan Moreno, have sent a letter to the chamber of the Prosecutor's Office of Democratic Memory, directed by Dolores Delgado, in which they demand that action be taken to prevent this event from taking place again.
In their letter, they point out that the call, which has been held again this year, is driven by "various entities of fascist ideology" and that during the event messages of "nazi-like, ultra-nationalist, and anti-Semitic character" were uttered.
Furthermore, Santiago details that the event has also been disseminated through digital channels, emphasizing that it is "a collective and individual exaltation of the military uprising, of its leaders, of the foreign fighters who supported it, and of the ideological values that sustained it."
The IU leader adds that symbols and slogans linked to the aesthetics of "European fascism" are used at the concentration and emphasizes that it is not an "isolated episode," but rather a behavior "repeated and continued over time, which has been formally reported and brought to the attention of the Administration on numerous occasions."
IU demands sanctions and the dissolution of the organizing collective
In light of these facts, IU demands that the Prosecutor's Office file a complaint against those responsible for the "fascist exaltation" event and that it promotes the opening of a sanctioning file against its promoters before the competent administration, in accordance with what is provided in the Law of Democratic Memory.
In the same way, the left-wing formation urges the Secretary of State for Democratic Memory, the Government Delegation in Madrid, and the City Council of Majadahonda to provide all available documentation and information about the tribute, and to adopt the necessary measures to proceed with the dissolution of the collective that organizes it.
