United Left has announced that it will bring to the municipalities where it has representation a series of motions to support a "true solidarity" with Ceuta, in contrast to the "partisan concentrations" promoted by the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP) and supported by PP and Vox.
Through these initiatives, the organization will also express its "condemnation" of the "instrumentalization of migrant people as a mechanism of political or geopolitical pressure by any State or political actor".
IU details in a statement that these motions include the commitment to "territorial co-responsibility" in the reception and transfer of migrant people, with special attention to unaccompanied minors, among the different autonomous communities.
Criticism of FEMP's concentrations
The reference text for these motions, drafted by the Municipalism Area of IU coordinated by Rafael Pérez, "responds" to the "orchestrated maneuver" by PP and Vox, whom it accuses of "instrumentalizing" the FEMP with the call for this Wednesday of "partisan concentrations" whose objective would be "to attack the state government under the supposed and false excuse of supporting Ceuta".
For this reason, IU's proposal explicitly includes "defending the plural nature of the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces, demanding that its calls and statements be promoted through dialogue, consultation, and consensus among the represented political forces, and rejecting its partisan use".
The formation also warns of the "chain of radical actions against migrant people" in Ceuta and links this situation to the discourse attributed to PP and Vox.
Support for Ceuta and defense of human rights
IU maintains that support for Ceuta is "fully compatible with the defense of human rights and with the protection of migrant, refugee, international protection seekers, and especially, of children who are without family protection".
The organization led by Antonio Maíllo emphasizes that "there is no contradiction between defending Ceuta and defending the fundamental rights of those who arrive there. Both issues are part of the same democratic, humanitarian, and responsible response".
