The Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles, expressed this Thursday in Lebanon her recognition to the Spanish soldiers deployed within the United Nations Interim Force (UNIFIL), during a visit on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the presence of the Armed Forces at the border of that country with Israel. "It is a pride to witness the magnificent work they do for peace and security," she conveyed to them.

During her tour of the 'Miguel de Cervantes' Base, Robles shared with the personnel stationed there the numerous expressions of affection and recognition she receives in Spain "for their professionalism and dedication wherever they are needed" and reiterated her gratitude for the dedication and generosity with which they work in favor of security and peace in the area.

The Defense Minister emphasized that this commitment remains "despite the difficult moments the area is going through," referring to the worsening security situation resulting from Israel's attacks and the increase in violence following the aggression of Tel Aviv and Washington against Iran at the beginning of this year.

Almost 700 Spanish soldiers in the 'Blue Line'

Robles highlighted the high training of the almost 700 Spanish soldiers deployed in the so-called 'Blue Line', responsible for preserving stability through patrols and surveillance tasks, direct coordination with the Lebanese Armed Forces, and monitoring compliance with UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which ended the conflict between Israel and the Shiite militia party Hezbollah. Spain leads the southeastern sector of the mission, under whose command contingents from India, Nepal, Serbia, and other nationalities also operate.

"Thanks to their work, Spain contributes to peace in the world and to being able to help the civilian population, which always suffers, very closely and unjustly, the consequences of a conflict situation," Robles pointed out, according to information released by the Ministry of Defense.

The minister also emphasized that "it is no coincidence that the Spanish Armed Forces are the most valued institution, no matter where they are deployed, wherever they are, they are a guarantee of professionalism" and that "their uniform provides security to all who have the opportunity to have them close." The current mandate of UNIFIL will remain in effect until December 31 of this year.
