The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has called this Saturday for an active defense of democracy in an international context marked by wars, inequality, and the advance of authoritarian discourses.
During his speech at the IV Reunión en Defensa de la Democracia, held in Barcelona, Sánchez maintained that the current moment demands something more than political resistance. “It's not enough to resist, we have to propose,” he affirmed before the international leaders gathered at the event promoted by the Spanish Executive.
A response to global uncertainty
The head of the Executive warned that democracy faces simultaneous threats: war conflicts, widening social gaps, and citizen disaffection towards institutions.
In that scenario, he defended the need to build concrete responses from the progressive space and reinforce international cooperation between like-minded governments. Sánchez proposed that democratic stability also involves combating inequality and offering economic security to the middle and working classes.
Barcelona as an international showcase
The summit held at Fira de Barcelona Gran Via brings together leaders and representatives from different countries linked to the international progressive space.
With this forum, the Government seeks to project Spain as a political meeting point at a time of growing global polarization and debate about the future of the Western democratic model.
