Football has a unique ability to create unexpected heroes. The latest example comes from Cape Verde and has a proper name: Vozinha. The veteran Cape Verde goalkeeper has gone from having around 50,000 followers on Instagram to exceeding 5.5 million just a few hours after his performance against Spain in the 2026 World Cup.
The goalkeeper's explosion in popularity coincides with the most important match of his career. At 40 years old, Vozinha was the great protagonist of Cape Verde's historic goalless draw against the Spanish team in the African team's World Cup debut.
His reaction upon discovering the growth of his social media account, shared in videos that have gone viral in recent hours, reflects the global impact of his performance.
The wall that stopped Spain
Spain, one of the favorites for the title, monopolized possession and created chances throughout the match, but time and again they were met by the interventions of the Cape Verdean goalkeeper. Vozinha made several decisive saves against attempts by Ferran Torres, Mikel Oyarzabal, and Aymeric Laporte, and was chosen as the best player of the match.
Spain finished the match with 27 shots and 75% possession, but failed to overcome Cape Verde's solid defense or beat their goalkeeper. The draw was a historic result for the African team, which is competing in a World Cup final phase for the first time.
The goalkeeper's performance also allowed Cape Verde to maintain one of the hallmarks that led them to the tournament: defensive solidity. During the qualifying phase, the team conceded only eight goals in ten matches and kept their goal clean on seven occasions.
A career built away from the spotlight
Born in Mindelo in 1986, Josimar José Évora Dias, known in football as Vozinha, began his career at clubs in Cape Verde before moving to Angolan football.
He later played for teams in Moldova, Cyprus, Slovakia, and Portugal, where he has spent a large part of his career. Until this World Cup, he played for GD Chaves, in the Portuguese second division.
A Cape Verde international since 2012, Vozinha has participated in several Africa Cup of Nations editions and has become one of the most important footballers in his national team's history.
His World Cup debut, moreover, allowed him to enter the history books by becoming, at 40 years old, one of the oldest players to debut in a World Cup.
What seemed like a routine afternoon for one of the tournament's great favorites ended up becoming the international consecration of a veteran goalkeeper who had been defending the Cape Verde jersey for more than a decade.
And while Spain lamented the missed chances, millions of fans around the world discovered the story of Vozinha.
