Environmental agents from the Nature Conservation Research Unit (UICON), dependent on the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, located 154.7 kilos of cockles in recent days during a control operation against poaching in the dune complex of Corrubedo and the lagoons of Carregal and Vixán.
According to the Xunta, the operation was carried out during a prolonged surveillance in the area, in which night vision goggles, a drone, and binoculars were used, allowing the detection of four people who were illegally extracting cockles and the place where they were hiding the mollusks.
The agents proceeded to seize all the seafood and returned it to the natural environment upon verifying that it was in optimal conditions, as stated by the regional department.
This intervention is part of the annual operational plan of the UICON, a recently created mobile brigade composed of eight agents, of which the Xunta highlights its "high technical capacity" to address issues that require specialized knowledge and coordinated actions.
