The Junta de Andalucía is carrying out an investment of around 2.1 million euros to remedy the damage caused by the storm train in the infrastructures of the Béznar-Rules system and to adapt the service road network of the irrigable area of the Bajo Guadalfeo. The Andalusian Government points out that the ongoing works will allow for the full functionality of key infrastructures for the agricultural sector of the Costa de Granada, while simultaneously reinforcing their safety and response capacity to new episodes of adverse weather.
The main intervention corresponds to the emergency works following the passage of the storm train in the Béznar-Rules system, which began in April 2026 with an execution period of eight months. This action represents an investment of 1.894 million euros, distributed in three differentiated lots.
The first of these, endowed with 1.276 million euros, focuses on the recovery of the service roads in the irrigable area of Motril and Salobreña, which suffered severe damage due to heavy rainfall. These roads are essential for both the maintenance of channels and ditches as well as for access to agricultural operations, farmhouses, greenhouses, and fruit and vegetable handling and distribution centers, in addition to their recreational use by walkers and cyclists.
The works affect about 15 kilometers of roads, where the pavement is being renewed through hot bituminous mix, surface treatments, and contributions of artificial gravel, depending on the needs of each section. Among the included roads are the Deire road, the Minasierra road, the Algarrobico road, the Molinos road, and the A-V ditch road in Motril, as well as the Tahiba, Cañaíllas, and lower Lobres ditch roads in Salobreña.
Most of these interventions are already practically completed. At the same time, fallen trees have been removed, preventive pruning has been carried out, slopes have been stabilized, ditches and channels have been repaired as needed, and a new transformer has been installed at the Vínculo weir.
The second lot, with an allocation of 525,000 euros, includes improvement and maintenance work on the Béznar and Rules dams, as well as various weirs and distributors in the irrigated area. Among the planned tasks are the repair of gates and drainage valves, the cleaning of sedimentation and landslides, the adaptation of roads and ditches, and the renewal of the exterior lighting of the Béznar dam, along with other control elements associated with the hydraulic infrastructures.
The third lot, with an amount of 93,000 euros, is intended for technical assistance and the coordination of safety and health for all the works carried out within the framework of this emergency action.
This investment is complemented by another intervention that the Junta de Andalucía is developing in parallel: the conditioning of the service road of the secondary channel of the traditional irrigation of Motril, in its final stretch, through a commission to Tragsa.
This work has a budget of 248,124.19 euros and a period of six months. The works are being carried out over about four kilometers of the Minasierra road, where the renewal of the pavement with hot bituminous mix will take place, an action planned between the months of September and October.
The territorial delegate of Agriculture, Fishing, Water, and Rural Development, Carmen Lidia Reyes, who has visited some of the affected roads in Motril, has highlighted the significance of these works for the Motril countryside and has emphasized that "this repair was very necessary to facilitate the day-to-day activities of farmers and the transport of their products to collection centers or the main communication routes."
Likewise, she expressed her satisfaction with the completion of the action and remembered Antonio Escámez, highlighting that "since my arrival at the Delegation, both he and the mayor have conveyed to us on numerous occasions the importance of these roads for a primary sector that is fundamental for this region and for the municipality of Motril."
For her part, the mayor of Motril, Luisa García Chamorro, has emphasized the relevance of these works, in which "all public administrations gain credibility by fulfilling their commitments," and has valued an intervention on some roads "fundamental for our agriculture and our primary sector."
The councilor has insisted that Motril continues to be a municipality that "lives off agriculture" and, for that reason, considers it the responsibility of all administrations, within their competencies, "to try to facilitate the life and work of our farmers."
"We have to thank the Junta de Andalucía, our president, Juanma Moreno, and all his team, for the involvement shown in the repair of these rural roads that are so important for the daily life of our farmers. After the train of storms that affected our municipality a few months ago, it was essential to act quickly and the technicians from the Junta de Andalucía got involved in their repair. Today we can talk about the fact that, in our municipality, spaces such as the Camino del Algarrobico, the Camino del Deire, or the Camino de los Molinos have been repaired, in addition to the fact that the Camino de Minasierra has already begun to be paved, a historical demand of Motril," the mayor emphasized.
Finally, the deputy mayor of Urban Planning and Tourism Promotion of the Motril City Council, María Ángeles Escámez, has reiterated the recognition to the Junta de Andalucía for "getting involved in the repair of fundamental roads for the daily work of many people from Motril." She also added that some of these roads are "passageways for our cycling tourism routes," so that, with their improvement, "Motril also gains in tourist projection and in the advancement towards the city model that we all want."
