Last Tuesday, the Congress approved in first instance the text that enables thousands of professionals trapped in alternative mutual insurance companies to the Social Security to join the public social security system, abandoning through a gateway an alternative private system that has condemned mutual members to undignified benefits, leading them to miserable pensions after several decades of work.

After more than three years of continuous struggle, dozens of meetings, exchange of documents, demonstrations, and mobilization actions undertaken by those affected, especially legal and procedural professionals, but also architects, chemists, and other groups, a legal reform arrives that remedies a chaotic situation in which the State - due to lack of oversight of the system - and the mutual insurance companies - through the use of deceitful and fraudulent procedures - have been responsible for the failure of this alternative mutual insurance system. Our recognition to the groups and individuals who have pushed this struggle.

The history of this great scam can be found in the reforms introduced between 1995 and 2005. They led the system to an individual capitalization model and caused a significant variation in the amounts of expected benefits without, in many cases, there being a real option to change.

The system created a model of captive contributions, which could not be recovered until the mutual member's retirement date. If one chose to switch to the RETA of the Social Security, the amounts saved in the mutual insurance company diminished year by year until they almost disappeared due to the commissions and expenses imposed by the mutual insurance company itself. Therefore, most professionals who joined opted to remain in the mutual insurance company until today.

With the reform that the Congress Plenary is scheduled to approve on June 11 - if the right-wing parties PP, Vox, and Junts do not agree to sink it - it is guaranteed that all professionals will be able to have a dignified pension and benefits, such as maternity or disability, in line with those of other workers.

From the Parliamentary Group of Sumar and Izquierda Unida we worked from beginning to end to improve the law. It is not the perfect norm that we would like. Furthermore, we hope that the defense will lapse to maintain the alternative mutualism system defended by PP, Vox, and Junts, and which they have imposed through an amendment. Otherwise, in a few years we would see thousands of professionals trapped again in the same situation of misery.

We are left to guarantee a pension equivalent to those now approved for passive mutual members already in retirement. It must be an obligation of the mutual society and not simply an arbitrary annual decision.
