The Minister of Economy and Finance of the Generalitat, Alícia Romero, has claimed that her department was the one that promoted the proposal to set asymmetric deficit targets for the autonomous communities, based on the different fiscal situation of each territory, an option whose discussion has been accepted by the Minister of Finance, Arcadi España.

The issue has been raised at the meeting of the Council of Fiscal and Financial Policy (CPFF) held this Monday, in which the minister has brought together the autonomies to agree on the stability targets for public administrations for the preparation of the General State Budgets (PGE) for 2027.

During the meeting with the regional councilors, the head of Finance presented the 2027-2029 stability path for all communities, which remains at 0.1% of GDP, the same threshold that was proposed last year and was rejected by the Congress of Deputies.

After the meeting, Councilor Romero explained to the media that the initiative to propose differentiated deficit targets by community came from the Generalitat of Catalonia and not from the Ministry.

She also recalled that this asymmetric deficit formula has already been applied previously and mentioned that in 2013 a different deficit target was approved for each autonomous community.

In this regard, Romero argued that there are currently communities that are not in a position to meet the deficit target due to underfunding and the exhaustion of the regional financing model, while others end their budgetary years with a surplus.
