The President of Algeria, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, has underlined this Sunday the solidity of the ties that his country maintains with Spain, a relationship "based on trust" and protected from "misunderstandings" after the latest crisis between the two states.

From the International Fair held in Algiers, and according to the news portal Tout Sur l'Algerie, Tebboune has emphasized the closeness between the two nations. "We are very close. We have realized that whenever there is a misunderstanding, things are put right very quickly because we are two countries that are very, very close," said the head of the Algerian state.

The leader has highlighted that Spain has been designated guest of honor country at this edition of the fair, emphasizing the weight of the Spanish economy and its contribution to the bilateral link. In this regard, he has remarked that Spain is "an economic power that brings many positive things to our relationship."

Tebboune has also recalled the long history of Spanish business presence in Algeria and has specifically mentioned three large companies that have been operating in the Maghreb country for years. He has insisted that Spain aims to increase its investments in Algerian territory to further consolidate its presence. "The choice of Spain as guest of honor is a choice of both reason and heart," he emphasized.

In the background of these statements is the diplomatic crisis that began in 2022, following the Spanish government's support for the Moroccan autonomy plan for Western Sahara. Despite that political tension, the gas supply from Algeria was maintained at all times and was not interrupted.

After more than two years of friction, bilateral relations have begun to normalize after Algiers decided, in November 2024, to lift the freeze on commercial operations that had been blocked since June 2022, which has allowed economic cooperation between the two countries to be channeled again.
