The Israeli Army reported this Sunday the arrest of several dozen settlers who were trying to cross the border line with Syria, an action in which the military forces intervened immediately to prevent the crossing, arrest those involved and make them available to the Israeli Police, after events that the military institution itself has described and condemned "energetically".

"Today (Sunday), dozens of Israeli citizens attempted to cross the border into Syrian territory," a spokesman for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a statement.

In response to this attempt, "a contingent of the IDF quickly went to the scene, prevented the crossing and arrested them," explained the spokesman, who added that, once under military custody, "the detainees were handed over to the Israel Police for processing."

The military representative reiterated the Army's rejection of what happened and insisted on the seriousness of the episode: "The IDF strongly condemns this attempted crossing," he remarked, emphasizing that "this is a serious incident that constitutes a crime and endangers IDF forces and the civilian population."

According to the Israeli public broadcaster Kan, the action was carried out by around 70 settlers linked to the 'Hashan Pioneers' group, who tried to access Syrian territory through Mount Hermon.

This massif has remained under Israeli control since the fall of Syrian President Bashar al Assad at the end of 2024, integrated into the so-called 'security zone' that Israel maintains in Syrian territory with arguments similar to those used to justify the areas under its control in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon, and over which it also refuses to cede sovereignty.
