The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) announced this Sunday that its units stationed in the Middle East located, intercepted, and destroyed two Iranian-origin drones operating near the Strait of Hormuz.
According to the statement released, these devices posed an "imminent threat" to commercial vessels and international maritime traffic crossing this strategic passage for global trade.
"Earlier today, U.S. forces in the Middle East shot down two Iranian one-way attack drones that were threatening international shipping in the Strait of Hormuz," CENTCOM reported via its social media channels.
The U.S. military command also emphasized that its personnel remain on high alert in the area, ready to continue protecting the interests of its partners and to react to any new hostile action from Tehran.
This new incident occurs in a context of a still very fragile ceasefire between Washington and Iran. Last Friday, CENTCOM had already destroyed six Iranian missiles and four drones that were heading towards the Strait of Hormuz and several neighboring Gulf countries. In retaliation, the United States bombed coastal surveillance radar stations in Goruk and on Qeshm Island, fueling a new escalation of tension in the region.
