The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has announced that next Tuesday the Executive will formally propose to the European Union the rupture of the Association Agreement with Israel, understanding that "a government that violates international law cannot be a partner of Europe".

"This Tuesday the Government of Spain will take to Europe the proposal that the European Union break its Association Agreement with Israel. And we are going to do it, not because we have anything, on the contrary, we are a friendly people to the people of Israel. But we do not agree with the actions that its Government is carrying out. He who violates international law and, therefore, violates the principles and values of the European Union, cannot be a partner of the EU," Sánchez stressed this Sunday at an event held in Gibraleón (Huelva), where he was accompanied by the Deputy Secretary General of the PSOE, Secretary General of the PSOE-A and candidate for the presidency of the Junta de Andalucía, María Jesús Montero.

The head of the Executive has explained that he will claim the support of the rest of the community partners and has insisted that it is an initiative that "is not left or right." During his speech, he has called for a halt to the decisions of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and to put an end to the conflicts shaking the Middle East.

"This war, which is an immense mistake, is not only costing thousands of human lives, it is also costing millions of displaced people throughout the Middle East region and billions of euros in economic losses and affecting the pockets of the people, the most ordinary people in our country. That is why I ask those who started this war to stop this war and to put a stop to Netanyahu," he asserted.

Last Tuesday, April 14, a European Citizens' Initiative managed to gather one million signatures from citizens of at least seven Member States to demand that the EU completely suspend its Association Agreement with Israel.

From now on, the European Commission must proceed with the verification of the signatures and, if it is confirmed that the established requirements are met, the Community Executive will have a maximum period of six months to rule and detail what actions it plans to take, if any.
