Galicia will assume the coordination of the representation of the Spanish autonomous communities in fishing matters before the Agriculture and Fisheries (Agrefish) formation of the Council of the European Union during the second half of 2026.
It takes over from Andalusia, thus assuming this function, as well as that of dialogue with the central Government and with the Permanent Representation of Spain to the EU (Reper).
This period will coincide with the Irish presidency, which will place the competitiveness, sustainability, and resilience of the European fishing sector among its priorities.
With this position, Galicia "reinforces its participation in the decision-making processes adopted in Brussels, continuing the defense of the maritime-industry chain and its socioeconomic drive," highlights the Galician Government.
On the other hand, the Consello de la Xunta has ratified the "Manifesto Rumbo á Reforma da Política Pesqueira Común," which Galicia has taken to Brussels to lead the proposal of peripheral maritime regions to accelerate the reform of the Common Fisheries Policy.
In this regard, the President of the Xunta, Alfonso Rueda, emphasizes that "it is necessary for the weight of economic and social factors to be taken into account in common policy," since otherwise, the consequence is that fishing production continues to be outsourced to third countries," which "do not comply" with the requirements of European and Galician fleets.
The objective is to influence the community debate during the full review process of the Common Fisheries Policy, the design of the future Vision 2040 for fisheries and aquaculture, and the negotiation of the next multiannual financial framework.
