The Minister of Rural Affairs, María José Gómez, reiterated this Friday the Xunta's commitment to "orderly and sustainable" forest management that "helps to combat abandonment".
The regional official made these statements during her speech at the ordinary assembly of Lugo Madera, held in the Lugo municipality of Vilalba.
Gómez underlined the strategic importance of the forestry and timber sector in Galicia, which she defined as one of the Community's "great economic strengths", highlighting its weight in the rural economy and employment.
In this regard, she highlighted the specific contribution of the province of Lugo, both due to its large forest area and the presence of processing industry and its capacity to generate activity throughout the timber value chain.
The minister stressed that Galicia is going through a "decisive" moment in its forest policy, as it is consolidating a "more orderly, professional, and productive" model, aimed at making better use of resources and retaining population in rural areas.
