The Firefighters stabilize 70% of the right flank of the La Bisbal d’Empordà fire

The Bombers de la Generalitat have managed to stabilize 70% of the right flank of the fire declared on Friday in La Bisbal d’Empordà, in Girona, during the early hours of Saturday. The operation maintains the confinement orders until the situation is re-evaluated in the afternoon, after the predicted wind change with the arrival of the sea breeze.

The Bombers de la Generalitat have managed to stabilize during the early hours of this Saturday 70% of the right flank of the fire declared on Friday in La Bisbal d’Empordà, in Girona, as explained by the head of the corps, David Borrell.

That right flank is the one that most concerns the operation, although the evolution in the last few hours has allowed an opportunity to continue working before the weather conditions change. Borrell pointed out that, until the marinada wind enters around midday, the teams have room to try to close that sector of the fire.

The work is progressing “well”, but the Bombers warn that there is still a lot to do. During the night, about 100 hectares have burned, within a much larger working perimeter of about 2,300 hectares, on which the extinction device remains deployed.

Confinements remain in effect

The confinement orders will remain active until the situation is re-evaluated in the afternoon, once the effect of the predicted wind change is checked. The Bombers insist that staying indoors remains the safest option for the affected population.

Borrell recalled that, although it is understandable that the advance of the fire causes nervousness among residents, self-evacuating without instructions from emergency services can put the population at risk. The head of Bombers stressed that when people stay indoors they are “safer” and that exposing oneself to fire by one's own decision constitutes “recklessness”.

The operation's message is clear: follow official instructions, avoid unnecessary travel, and do not leave the confined areas except with express instructions from emergency services.

Impact on urbanizations in Calonge

In the last few hours, the fire has reached different urbanizations in the Calonge area, especially Les Cabanyes, where damage to gardening elements, fences, and windows has been recorded. A house has also been burned, according to information provided by the Bombers.

On the left flank, the greatest impact reported so far has been the burning of a farmhouse. The operation continues to assess material damage while maintaining the priority of containing the advance of the fire and protecting inhabited areas.

The fire continues to require prudent action in a scenario conditioned by the wind, proximity to residential areas, and the extent of the perimeter on which emergency services are working.

A key afternoon to reevaluate the situation

The evolution of the fire will largely depend on the change in wind predicted during the day. The arrival of the sea breeze could alter the fire's behavior, which is why the Firefighters remain cautious despite the progress made during the early morning.

The afternoon will be key to deciding whether confinement orders can be lifted or modified and to assess the real state of the flanks. Meanwhile, the operation will remain focused on consolidating the work done on the right flank and preventing new advances towards inhabited areas.

The fire in La Bisbal d’Empordà remains active, but the progress made in the early morning allows the operation to gain time in the most delicate sector. The priority now is to maintain the safety of the population, contain the perimeter, and wait for meteorological conditions to allow for the continued extinguishing of the fire.
