The acting mayor of Córdoba, Cintia Bustos, has condemned this Saturday, on behalf of the entire local government, the damage caused at the base of the sculpture dedicated to Maimonides in the Judería, where a swastika has appeared painted with spray.
According to the City Council in a statement, Bustos has defined the incident as an "attack on heritage" and has emphasized the "extreme seriousness of the message of hate that the graffiti represents."
The Local Police of Córdoba has drawn up an initial report describing the damages and will forward the case to the National Police Corps, the competent authority for investigating possible crimes against heritage.
In this regard, the acting mayor has expressed her confidence that "the investigations can result in the identification of the person or persons responsible as soon as possible."
Additionally, the municipal company Sadeco has planned for the first shift next Monday, August 3, a specific operation to remove the graffiti. The president of the public entity, Miguel Ruiz Madruga, has explained that they have a specialized team for the removal of this type of paint, "which has a lot of experience in cleaning graffiti from stone, a particularly complicated task."
For this reason, he has indicated that these tasks will be "prioritized" at the beginning of the week, "ensuring that the sculpture does not suffer any additional damage or wear from our intervention."
Bustos has also emphasized that "fortunately, this type of absolutely despicable behavior is anecdotal" in Córdoba" and has wanted to highlight the "immense respect and care that the people of Córdoba show for the monumental, cultural, historical, and artistic heritage; even when large concentrations of people or mass celebrations occur." "It is a shame that the actions of one or a few distort the reality of our city," she concluded.
The acting mayor has also emphasized the work of the government team led by José María Bellido to reinforce citizen security and the protection of publicly owned properties, recalling the approval of the Citizen Coexistence Ordinance, on which the Local Police has been carrying out an informative and awareness campaign throughout the summer season, prior to the phase of imposing sanctions.
