Acciona Energía has announced this Monday that it will launch a new 1 GWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in the Atacama Desert (Chile), which will double its storage capacity in the country.
The project will be integrated into the El Romero photovoltaic plant, with 246 MWp, and will have a power of 196 MW and 980 MWh of capacity, allowing the injection of 196 MW of renewable energy for five consecutive hours. The company expects it to come into operation at the end of 2027.
This development is in addition to the 1 GWh storage system that Acciona Energía announced at the end of last year in the Malgarida solar complex (238 MWp), currently under construction.
"Both projects will contribute to optimizing renewable energy management, improving the stability of the electricity grid, and strengthening supply security in the local electricity system," the company said in a statement.
Currently, Acciona Energía has 922 MW installed in Chile, distributed among the wind farms of Punta Palmeras (45 MW), San Gabriel (183 MW) and Tolpán Sur (84 MW), and the photovoltaic solar plants of El Romero (246 MWp), Malgarida (238 MWp), Usya (64 MWp) and Almeyda (62 MWp).
