EDP has begun in its hybrid complex of Las Lomillas, located in the municipality of Tébar in Cuenca, the tests of the storage system with batteries that completes the first installation in the Iberian Peninsula that brings together, in a single connection point, wind generation, photovoltaic generation, and electrical storage, reaching a total power of 122 megawatts (MW).
This development takes advantage of an evacuation infrastructure close to 50 MW and represents the culmination of the transformation of this site, where the company has been operating a wind farm of 49.5 MW since 2005, to which in 2025 it added a solar plant of 36 MW and, more recently, a battery installation of 36 MW and 72 megawatt-hours (MWh).
According to EDP, the integration of these three technologies, coordinated through an energy control system located in the substation, makes it possible to optimize renewable generation, strengthen the stability and flexibility of the electrical system, and adjust a production, by definition intermittent, to the actual needs of the grid.
The commissioning of the batteries in Las Lomillas is considered a key milestone towards a more flexible and manageable renewable generation model, which also helps to overcome one of the major barriers of the energy transition: the lack of access and available connections to the grid, by maximizing existing infrastructures without requiring new evacuation points.
The storage plant is part of the IDAE Aid Program for innovative energy storage projects hybridized with renewables, included in the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan, funded by the European Union with Next Generation EU funds, and has obtained a maximum aid of 6.2 million euros.
The CEO of EDP, Miguel Stilwell de Andrade, has emphasized that this development "represents a significant advance in the integration of renewable technologies and energy storage systems" and has argued that this model allows "to make the most of the capacity of the connection point to the grid," while urging that administrative processes be expedited to facilitate the launch of more initiatives of this type.
EDP presents itself as a pioneer in hybridization in the Iberian Peninsula, with nearly 1 gigawatt (GW) of hybrid power between Spain and Portugal, and more than 260 MW in the Spanish market following the commissioning of the complete hybridization of Las Lomillas.
In Castilla-La Mancha, the energy company manages ten wind farms and two hybrid photovoltaic installations, with more than 480 MW of combined power, and in the whole of the Peninsula, it adds more than 14 GW of installed capacity, 288,000 kilometers of electrical networks, and 60 terawatt hours (TWh) of distributed energy.
