Young people in Spain are making increasingly longer train journeys thanks to the Verano Joven program, according to data from the ticket sales platform Trainline. The company indicates that train journeys of more than three hours experienced a year-on-year increase of 78% during the last summer, while trips of less than an hour decreased by 20%.
This study points to a change in habits, in which users between 18 and 30 years old are opting for long distances to discover new destinations within the national territory.
Price continues to be the decisive element, given that 9 out of 10 young people place "value for money" as a fundamental aspect when organizing and booking their holidays.
In addition to the usual destinations, Trainline's booking figures highlight Salamanca (+132%) and El Puerto de Santa María (+111%) as the cities with the largest year-on-year increases. These are followed by A Coruña (+90%), Cádiz (+86%), Albacete (+80%), and Granada (+78%).
Despite this boom in new routes, the main Spanish capitals maintained an important role in the overall volume of summer travel.
Among the major cities, Seville led the increase with 95% more trips, followed by Madrid (+57%), Valencia (+29%), and Barcelona (+26%).
