The European Union's (EU) Commissioner for Housing and Energy, Dan Jorgensen, warned this Tuesday of the need to prepare for a "quite tough" summer due to the impact of the war in Iran, considering that the global energy market is going through a situation of extreme pressure.

In an interview granted to "La Vanguardia" and reported by Europa Press, he stressed that "Flying will be more expensive and, in some cases, we could even see cancellations. This must be a big wake-up call. It must show us that the transition to renewable energy sources is absolutely necessary".

Jorgensen has pointed out that, in his opinion, energy prices will remain high for a prolonged period and that "even if peace is declared tomorrow, difficult weeks, months, and even years await us regarding energy prices" due to the severe deterioration of natural gas infrastructure in the Middle East, and in particular in Qatar, whose recovery will take years.

Questioned about whether he foresees a similar scenario in the oil market, he pointed out that the situation is "somewhat different" and that oil production could be restored more quickly, so it would be a problem that could be resolved in a matter of weeks.

The commissioner has detailed that, since the start of the war in Iran, the EU has disbursed more than 20 billion euros in additional energy costs and recalled that "As long as we import more than 370 billion euros annually in fossil fuels, we will be too vulnerable".
