MÉS per Mallorca, integrated into the Parliamentary Group of Sumar, will defend this week in the Mixed Commission (Congress and Senate) of Insularity a proposal that seeks to stop the expansion of Eivissa airport and, at the same time, pressure the central Government so that the Balearic Islands have a voice in the co-management of airport infrastructures.

According to the initiative, which Europa Press has accessed and which will be put to a vote next Thursday in the General Courts, Sumar maintains that the expansion of Eivissa airport "does not respond to the general interest nor to the territorial, social, and environmental carrying capacity of the island".

With this text, it is intended to halt any administrative, technical, or contractual procedure linked to the expansion plan of Eivissa airport, including the tender for technical assistance to draft the project for the new functional design of the terminal building.

The proposal also calls for reviewing the Airport Regulation Document corresponding to the 2027-2031 period before its final approval, as well as the Airport Master Plan, and promoting measures that reduce operational capacity during high season to alleviate tourist pressure on the island of Eivissa.

In relation to the future planning of the infrastructure, MÉS proposes introducing criteria for territorial carrying capacity, environmental sustainability, and social cohesion.

Finally, the party integrated into Sumar aims for the Government to advance in a model of airport co-management that ensures effective participation of the institutions of the Balearic Islands, a demand that territories such as the Basque Country, the Canary Islands, and Catalonia, among other communities, are also negotiating.
