The European Commission expressed this Friday its condemnation of the recent "attack" with drones that caused a fire on two gas tankers in the port of Damietta, in Egypt, emphasizing that it constitutes a "serious threat" to the stability of the Middle East, already strained by the war that has been ongoing for five months following the offensive launched by the United States and Israel against Iran.
In a statement, the European External Action Service conveyed its "solidarity" with Cairo regarding the "attack" recorded on Wednesday, which did not cause any casualties and, for now, has not been claimed by any group.
"The European Union condemns this act of aggression against Egypt as a serious threat to regional stability and maritime security. It reiterates the need to respect international law and the freedom and security of navigation," stated the community diplomacy, also reiterating its support for "efforts aimed at de-escalation."
The Commission, which has highlighted its "long-standing partnership" with Egypt, has also reaffirmed its "commitment to collaborate" with Mediterranean partners and "all" of the Middle East with the aim of "safeguarding regional stability."
Egyptian authorities have indicated that the port continues to operate normally and that all terminals and moorings maintain the scheduled traffic of incoming and outgoing ships.
For its part, the Iranian government warned this Thursday about "Israeli machinations and 'false flag' operations" and emphasized that the security of Egypt "is of paramount importance" for the Asian country, after the United States linked the incident to the war unleashed against Iran.
