The Government of Italy has announced the suspension of the application of the Schengen area with Spain and the closure of maritime and air borders with our country in response to the migratory crisis triggered in Ceuta.

The decision has been adopted by the Italian Ministry of the Interior after the meeting of the Committee for Analysis on Immigration and Border Security, chaired this Friday by Minister Matteo Piantedosi at the Viminal headquarters.

According to the Italian Executive, the measure responds to the latest information analyzed on the evolution of the migratory crisis, which has led Rome to tighten border controls with Spain.

Agreement with France to strengthen the land border

In addition, Piantedosi has had a telephone conversation with the French Minister of the Interior, Laurent Nuñez, in which both have agreed to strengthen controls along the land border between France and Italy.

The Italian Ministry of the Interior has specified that this reinforcement will be carried out within the framework of the existing police cooperation agreements between both countries to address irregular immigration and strengthen security at the external borders of the European Union.
