The King of England, Charles III, has sent his congratulations to the United States for the "milestone" that the Declaration of Independence represented, which marks 250 years this Saturday, an event that marked the start of the War of Independence between the thirteen North American colonies and the British Crown.
"Happy 250th to the United States! Today the United States celebrates its 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. It has been wonderful to be able to celebrate this milestone with you this year," Charles III published on social media, alluding to the visit he and his wife, Camilla, made last April.
The British Royal Household thus commemorates the trip of Charles and Camilla to Washington D.C., New York, and Virginia on an official visit "on the occasion" of the anniversary.
The United Kingdom recognized the independence of the thirteen colonies in 1783 and, since then, both countries have been strengthening ties until consolidating a 'special relationship'. The monarch himself has underlined the "extraordinary evolution" of this partnership "to overcome conflict and forge one of the closest and most productive alliances the world has ever seen."
"We face together the problems of today's world and the opportunities of tomorrow," he stated, before expressing his aspiration that they continue to defend their shared values "for another 250 years." The British King has framed the responsibility of safeguarding nature, one of the priorities of his reign, within this context.
Charles III's visit to the United States took place at a sensitive time for bilateral relations, due to London's refusal to join the US and Israeli military offensive against Iran. The trip concluded with praise from then-President Donald Trump for the monarch.
