At least five people have lost their lives and another 31 have been injured after an attack by Russian forces against the city of Sumy, in northeastern Ukraine, according to Ukrainian authorities. Among the fatalities are three men aged 54, 66, and 58, as well as a 13-year-old girl.
"To our great regret, a man who was injured has died in the hospital. The death toll from the Russian attack with a guided bomb on Sumy rises to five," the military governor of the region, Oleg Hrigorov, stated on social media. Five of the injured are in serious condition.
The attack occurred around 2:30 PM, when the Russian projectile hit a civilian infrastructure area near a bus stop and a gas station, according to the Ukrainian news portal Ukrinform.
The bombing caused material damage to seven apartments, four vehicles, a gas station, a car dealership, a restaurant, and a garage cooperative. The Ukrainian War Crimes Commission has opened an investigation to clarify what happened.
Given this situation, Ukrainian authorities have asked citizens to avoid going to gas stations due to the high risk of new Russian attacks against these types of facilities.
