The attempted attack against the president of the United States, Donald Trump, during the annual dinner of the White House Correspondents' Association has caused a rapid wave of international reactions. Foreign governments and leaders have condemned what happened and have agreed to warn about the risk that political violence represents in Western democracies.

The incident, which forced Trump to be evacuated from the Washington Hilton hotel after the intrusion of an armed man, resulted in the arrest of the suspect and one agent slightly injured.

The European Union condemns political violence

The European Union's High Representative for Foreign Policy, Kaja Kallas, celebrated that Trump and the rest of the attendees are out of danger after the shooting.

“I am glad to know that all attendees, including President Trump, are safe,” she said on social media. Kallas added that “political violence has no place in a democracy” and regretted that an event linked to freedom of the press had become “a scene of fear.”

The head of European diplomacy also wished a speedy recovery to the agent injured during the intervention.

Israel expresses its support for Washington

From Israel, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gideon Saar, condemned "in the strongest possible terms" the attack and congratulated the US security forces for their actions.

“I condemn the shooting that occurred during the White House Correspondents' Dinner. Zero tolerance for political violence,” he wrote on X. Saar also added that “Israel unconditionally supports the United States and President Trump.”

Milei denounces a new assassination attempt

The Argentine government of Javier Milei qualified the events as a “new assassination attempt” against Trump and issued an official statement of support for the US president.

“The Office of the President expresses its strongest repudiation of the new assassination attempt that Donald J. Trump has suffered,” stated the Argentine Presidency, which celebrated that both Trump and the First Lady, Melania Trump, and the rest of the attendees were unharmed.

The Argentine Executive went further by linking the attack to the international political climate and maintained that Milei condemns "the violent rhetoric of the left everywhere in the world that promotes these types of attacks".

Investigation underway

While reactions continue, US authorities maintain open the investigation into the attacker, identified by several media outlets as Cole Allen, 31 years old and a resident of California. The FBI director, Kash Patel, confirmed that he was carrying a long gun when he was subdued by the Secret Service.

The episode once again places presidential security at the center of the political debate in the United States, at a particularly sensitive moment for the Trump Administration.
