The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, has indicated this Tuesday that it is "probable" that she will hold a meeting with the King of Spain, Felipe VI, within the framework of the Football World Cup, an event that, as she has advanced, could be held in Mexico City.

During her morning press conference at the National Palace, the president explained that conversations between both parties continue through the corresponding diplomatic channels.

"Yes, it is probable, Foreign Relations is still looking into it with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Spain and with the representation of the head of the Spanish State, and I think tomorrow or the day after we can inform you," she stated.

This possible meeting between Sheinbaum and the Spanish monarch would take place within the framework of the match that Spain and Uruguay will play in Mexico on June 26.

Diplomatic rapprochement between Mexico and Spain

The possible meeting is framed within a context of progressive improvement of bilateral relations between both countries, after a period of diplomatic tensions during the mandate of Andrés Manuel López Obrador, marked by the debate on the memory of the conquest and the colonial period.

In recent months, both capitals have shown signs of détente, with more fluid institutional contacts and messages of mutual recognition at different levels.

The relationship between Mexico and Spain has been conditioned by differences regarding the interpretation of the colonial past. However, recently Felipe VI himself acknowledged in an official event that during the conquest of America there was "much abuse," a gesture interpreted as part of a stage of greater diplomatic détente.
