The United Nations Security Council has expressed its firm rejection of the suicide bombing carried out last Sunday near a police station in the unstable province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, in northwestern Pakistan. The attack, claimed by Pakistani Taliban, resulted in the death of at least 16 people and left around twenty more injured.

In an official statement, "The members of the Security Council condemn in the strongest terms the atrocious and cowardly suicide terrorist attack carried out in front of a police station in Kabal, Swat district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa," highlight the members of this UN body.

The note mentions "the tragic death of at least 16 Pakistani citizens, mostly civilians," and also includes the claim of responsibility for the attack by the armed group Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

The members of the Council have emphasized "the need to hold accountable the authors, organizers, financiers, and sponsors of these reprehensible acts of terrorism," and "have urged all States to (...) actively cooperate with the Government of Pakistan in this regard."

Furthermore, they have reiterated that "Every act of terrorism is criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of its motivation, place, time, and author," and have reaffirmed "the need for all States to combat by all means (...) the threats to international peace and security caused by terrorist acts."

The border region with Afghanistan where the explosion occurred has been a hotspot of violence and instability for years, marked by frequent attacks by Pakistani Taliban. Islamabad has launched accusations against India and Afghan Taliban for alleged support to this organization, something that both New Delhi and Kabul have denied.
