Ramón Jáuregui, who held the position of Minister of the Presidency during the Government of José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, has stated that "the time has come for the party to react" and for the PSOE to initiate a process of ideological renewal and recomposition in the face of present and future challenges.
In an opinion piece published in ‘El Correo’, a newspaper with which he has collaborated for more than ten years, Jáuregui emphasizes that the party must face the coming months with a truthful narrative about its socioeconomic and political management, beyond the current judicial investigations affecting the party.
Justification for the extraordinary congress
Jáuregui argues that the volume and density of global changes require social democracy to reformulate its project, taking significant steps to aspire to a majority in the future.
According to the former minister, the only way to address these challenges is by urgently calling an extraordinary congress, which will allow the membership to acknowledge the situation and propose a renewed project. "It is the hour of its cadres, of its groups, of its members. It is the hour to recover an internal debate that we do not have, to reflect on what is happening to us, and to offer a renewed project," he wrote.
Jáuregui's political experience
Ramón Jáuregui has held various institutional positions, including:
- Vice-Lehendakari of the Basque Government
- Minister of Justice, Economy, Labor and Social Security in the Basque Government
- Secretary General of the PSE
- Basque and European Parliamentarian
This trajectory supports his position regarding the need for a deep internal debate and a renewal of the PSOE's leadership and image.
Jáuregui stresses that the party must face with transparency the explanations about the corruption cases that affect it. Furthermore, he considers that this situation is an opportunity to renew the PSOE's image, strengthen its internal structure, and prepare the party for the upcoming political challenges.
