The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, indicated this Tuesday that she trusts in holding a meeting with King Felipe VI during the monarch's visit to the country to attend, on June 26, the match that the Spanish national football team will play against Uruguay.

"It is probable," the leader stated in her daily press conference when questioned about a possible meeting with the Spanish Head of State, clarifying that both the Secretariat of Foreign Affairs of Mexico, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Spain, and the Royal Household are coordinating the details.

"I believe that tomorrow or the day after we will be able to inform you," added Sheinbaum, who explained that the meeting would take place in Mexico City and not in Guadalajara, the city where the Spanish team's last group stage match will be played.

In parallel, the Minister of Education, Vocational Training and Sports, Milagros Tolón, confirmed this Tuesday, in the press conference following the Council of Ministers, that she will accompany Felipe VI on this official trip.

The monarch's trip is part of the rapprochement between the two countries after Felipe VI acknowledged in mid-March that there was "much abuse" during the Conquest and admitted that those events, seen with current values, are not a reason to feel "proud."

These statements were well received by the Mexican president, who subsequently decided to travel to Spain to participate in a meeting in defense of democracy alongside other progressive leaders on April 18.

Furthermore, Sheinbaum emphasized that the bilateral relationship is now experiencing a "different moment" from the one that originated after Felipe VI's lack of response to the letter sent in 2019 by the then-president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, in which he requested an apology for the abuses committed during the Conquest.
