The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation has signed an agreement this Monday to set up an office of the Permanent Court of Arbitration in Spain, with the aim of strengthening the "global projection" of Spanish in the "legal field" and bringing the services of this institution closer to "a broad Spanish-speaking community".

During the meeting between Minister José Manuel Albares and the Secretary General of the Court, Marcin Czepelak, both parties addressed "the importance of this body in the peaceful resolution of international disputes, Spain's common and firm commitment to an international order based on international law", as stated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in an official note.

The Executive considers that this step represents "a milestone of great relevance" to reinforce Spain's international projection "as a photo of dispute resolution" and underlines that it "recognizes" the "solidity of the Spanish legal system, the excellence of its professionals and Spain's growing capacity to host international arbitration proceedings".

The agreement also contributes to strengthening "the country's role as a bridge between Europe, Latin America and the Mediterranean".

Albares stressed that this initiative positions Spain as a "consolidated and reference forum for arbitration", an "ideal place" for the function performed by the Permanent Court of Arbitration, and remarked that it "allows to enhance" Spanish "as a truly global language; also in the legal field".

The Permanent Court of Arbitration, created in 1899, is an intergovernmental organization that offers various services for the resolution of disputes within the international community, according to the definition of the organization itself.
