The Executive maintains that it "would not be understood" if the withdrawal of the passport of Begoña Gómez, wife of the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, were agreed upon, as requested by the popular prosecution to the magistrate investigating the case, Juan Carlos Peinado.
"We are talking about withdrawing the passport of the wife of the President of the Government of Spain," stressed the government spokesperson, Elma Saiz, when questioned about this request, insisting that "it is a measure that would not be understood."
The popular prosecutions, led by Hazte Oír, reiterated this Monday their request that Begoña Gómez be stripped of her passport, prevented from leaving national territory, and obliged to appear in court every fifteen days. Furthermore, they demand that she not be able to dispose of her company's shares or the brands linked to the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM).
Legal sources informed Europa Press of these requests following the preliminary hearing and the hearing for precautionary measures held this Monday in the courts of Plaza de Castilla (Madrid), to which Gómez, her advisor Cristina Álvarez, and the businessman Juan Carlos Barrabés, all investigated in the "Begoña Gómez case," were summoned.
After more than three hours of preliminary hearing, Judge Peinado, who proposes that Gómez be tried by a popular jury for alleged crimes of embezzlement, influence peddling, business corruption, and trademark misappropriation, has not yet decided on the precautionary measures requested by the prosecutions, which remain pending. The magistrate must rule on this in the coming days.
