The 2026 World Cup already has its first results and protagonists. Julián Quiñones made history by scoring the first goal of the tournament and becoming the first footballer born outside the country he represents to score in an opening match of a World Cup. Hours later, Hwang In-beom led South Korea's comeback against the Czech Republic to complete a day marked by two key names.
The two opening matches of the championship saw victories for Mexico and South Korea in Group A, as well as the first outstanding individual performances of a competition taking place in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
Mexico opened the World Cup with a 2-0 victory against South Africa at the Estadio Azteca, which was fully behind its team. The first goal was scored by Quiñones, who took advantage of one of the first clear opportunities of the match to put the hosts ahead and enter the tournament's history books.
Born in Colombia and naturalized Mexican in 2023, the forward thus added a unique record to an already special night. His goal paved the way for Javier Aguirre's team to win, who later completed the score to earn the first three points of the championship and provisionally sit at the top of the standings.
Hwang In-beom leads the tournament's first comeback
If Quiñones starred in the World Cup's debut, Hwang In-beom took charge of grabbing the spotlight in the second match of the day. South Korea defeated the Czech Republic 2-1 after falling behind and reacting with a great second half.
The South Korean midfielder was decisive in the comeback. He scored the equalizer when his team was struggling the most and later participated in the play that ultimately gave the Asians the victory. His performance made him one of the key figures in the tournament's early hours and one of the most outstanding players of the opening day.
Thanks to these results, Mexico and South Korea share the lead in Group A with three points, while South Africa and the Czech Republic are forced to react in their upcoming matches to avoid complicating their qualification chances.
The competition will continue this Friday with the debut of two other hosts. Canada will debut against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto, while the United States will begin its participation against Paraguay in Los Angeles. Both matches will serve to complete the first matchdays of the group stage of the 2026 World Cup.
