The investigative commission on the flood in the Congress of Deputies has set for the next May 18 a key day on which journalist Maribel Vilaplana and the president of the Júcar Hydrographic Confederation (CHJ), Miguel Polo, will appear. Both must provide explanations on the management and context of the floods that left 229 dead in October 2024.

Vilaplana, in the spotlight for his meeting with Mazón

Vilaplana's appearance comes after her statement before the court investigating the events in the judicial district of Catarroja. In court, the journalist recounted details of the long meal she had with the then president of the Generalitat, Carlos Mazón, on the same day as the catastrophe.

According to his testimony, Mazón would have remained for hours in the restaurant without urgently attending to the evolution of the floods, on a day when lunch and after-dinner conversation extended from the early afternoon until almost 8:00 PM, at which time the leader arrived at the Palau de la Generalitat.

The judicial investigation, conducted by the Court of First Instance and Instruction of Catarroja, keeps proceedings open for alleged reckless homicides, within the framework of the institutional management of the emergency.

Polo will have to explain the hydrological management

In the same parliamentary session, Miguel Polo will have to answer the groups' questions about the role of the Júcar Hydrographic Confederation during the episode of extreme rainfall. His intervention is considered key to clarifying the coordination of flow monitoring and prevention systems during the critical moments of the flood.
