Calm has not arrived at the State Attorney General's Office after the departure of Álvaro García Ortiz. The Association of Prosecutors (AF) has once again prevailed in the elections for the Fiscal Council, consolidating its position as the main force within the representative body of the fiscal career and reactivating internal pressure on the leadership of the Public Prosecutor's Office and Teresa Peramato.

The AF has secured six of the nine elective members of the Fiscal Council, compared to the two obtained by the Progressive Union of Prosecutors (UPF) and one by the Professional and Independent Association of Prosecutors (APIF).

The result reinforces the weight of the majority association within the consultative body that advises the State Attorney General's Office on key issues related to appointments, internal criteria, and institutional functioning.

Victory Reactivates Internal Struggle in the Prosecutor's Office

Beyond the distribution of members, the political interpretation of the result has been immediate within the fiscal career itself.

The Association of Prosecutors has interpreted the result as a clear signal that a majority part of the career demands changes in the direction of the institution. In this regard, its president, Cristina Dexeus, has publicly defended the need to strengthen the independence of the Public Prosecutor's Office and to correct internal dynamics questioned by the association.

The focus is particularly directed towards Teresa Peramato, who assumed top-level responsibilities within the State Attorney General's Office at a time of strong institutional tension and who has found herself at the center of some of these internal criticisms.

The AF has maintained a very critical stance in recent months regarding decisions adopted by the fiscal leadership, especially on issues related to appointments and internal functioning, in a context also marked by the political controversy surrounding the State Attorney General, Álvaro García Ortiz.

A Key Body within the Public Prosecutor's Office

The Fiscal Council is the main internal representation body of the fiscal career and acts as a consultative body on matters relevant to the functioning of the Public Prosecutor's Office. Although it does not have direct executive power over the Attorney General's Office, its composition is politically relevant because it reflects the balance of power within the fiscal career.

The new victory of the Association of Prosecutors thus consolidates the predominance of the sector most critical of the current institutional leadership and adds pressure on a particularly sensitive stage within the Public Prosecutor's Office.

The result also comes at a time of high tension in the judicial and fiscal sphere, with open debates on institutional independence, appointments, and relations between the Prosecutor's Office and political power.
