The machista violence once again leaves a particularly worrying figure. The Ministry of Equality has incorporated into the official record the murders of two women that occurred on August 5 in Asturias and Murcia, which raises the number of women murdered by their partners or ex-partners to 35 so far in 2026. This is the worst figure in the last five years at this point in the calendar, having far surpassed the 24 victims counted at this time in 2025.
The last two victims also had several elements in common. The woman murdered in Asturias was 50 years old, was allegedly murdered by her ex-spouse, there were previous reports of gender violence and she leaves behind two minor daughters. In Murcia, the victim was 44 years old, was allegedly murdered by her ex-partner, there were also previous reports and she leaves behind one minor daughter. Both cases have been officially confirmed by the Ministry of Equality.
The update from the Ministry reflects another particularly significant figure: 26 minors under 18 years old have been left orphaned as a result of the machista murders committed this year. Additionally, as of August 6, there are no pending cases under investigation within the official record for 2026.
By autonomous communities, Andalusia is the territory with the highest number of fatalities, with 9 women murdered, followed by the Comunitat Valenciana, with 5. Catalonia and the Community of Madrid each register 3 cases, while Aragón, the Canary Islands, Cantabria, Castilla-La Mancha, and Navarra each add 2 victims respectively. Asturias, Castilla y León, Extremadura, Galicia, and Murcia account for one case each.
The majority of the victims had ended the relationship
The Ministry's data shows that 22 of the 35 women murdered (62.9%) were victims of an ex-partner or a partner with whom the relationship was already broken, compared to 13 murdered by their partner at that time. In 18 cases, there was cohabitation between the victim and the aggressor, and in 17 they no longer lived together.
By age, the group with the highest number of victims is that of 41 to 50 years, with 10 women murdered, followed by the age range of 51 to 60 years, with 9.
Only a third of the cases had previous reports
The statistical sheet reflects that 12 of the 35 victims (34.3%) had filed one or more previous reports for gender violence against the alleged aggressor. Of these, in 11 cases the reports were filed by the victim herself and in one by other people.
In nine of those cases, distancing measures were adopted and seven were still in effect when the murder occurred. The Ministry also notes that those seven orders were violated by the alleged aggressors.
Another piece of data that the report includes is that seven alleged aggressors committed suicide after committing the murder and another three attempted it without success. In the remaining 25 cases, there was no suicide attempt.
