The president of the Autonomous City of Melilla, Juan José Imbroda, has opted not to clarify for now what his political future will be in view of the regional and municipal elections scheduled for May 2027, and has stressed that any decision on a possible candidacy will be in the hands of the Popular Party and its national leader, Alberto Núñez Feijóo.

On the verge of turning 82 this June, the also head of the PP in Melilla has insisted that the time has not yet come to talk about electoral lists and has reiterated that, in the current political moment, he does not see justification for opening that internal debate.

"It is not yet time for candidacies or for candidate proposals," the Melilla leader stressed when questioned about information published in national media about eventual replacements at the head of the popular candidacy in the city.

Imbroda recalled that he has led the City since 2000 thanks, as he said, to the continued support of the residents of Melilla and the backing of his party. "I have been president since 2000 because the people of Melilla wanted it," he stated, expressing his gratitude both to the citizens and to the PP, which he described as "the vehicle" that has allowed him to run in successive elections.

In this regard, he wanted to emphasize that the designation of the person who will lead the PP candidacy in Melilla is not the responsibility of the local or regional structures, but of the national leadership of the party and, ultimately, of its president, Alberto Núñez Feijóo. "I am at the disposal of what the Popular Party says," he repeated on several occasions to make his position clear.

The leader detailed that, in accordance with the statutes and the usual practice of the organization, it is up to the national leadership to formulate the proposals for candidates for regional presidencies and state-level positions. "The national president is the one who appoints and proposes regional presidents," he indicated, pointing out that "these decisions are made from the national headquarters in Génova."

Likewise, he has warned that the political calendar could be modified in the event that the general elections were brought forward. "There is a year left, if he doesn't leave before, which he should leave before," he pointed out in allusion to the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, implying that a possible advance of the elections would force the acceleration of internal decision-making.

DEMANDS GENERAL ELECTIONS

On the other hand, the Melilla president has called for the convening of general elections following the search carried out by the Central Operational Unit (UCO) of the Civil Guard at the federal headquarters of the PSOE, located on Ferraz street in Madrid.

Imbroda has admitted that he feels uneasy "about the image Spain is projecting and about the political situation the country is going through." In his opinion, "the only possible way out is to return the word to the citizens" through the holding of new state-level elections.

"The only way is for Spaniards to speak," maintained the popular leader, who considers that "the current situation requires a democratic response through the ballot box" to face the political crisis that, in his opinion, Spain is experiencing.
