The mayor of Palma, Jaime Martínez (PP), has conveyed to King Felipe VI a formal invitation to participate in the commemorative events for the 800 years of the conquest of Mallorca by Jaume I, scheduled for 2029.
The proposal has been one of the issues addressed during the traditional summer audience that the monarch holds each year and which this time has taken place at the Royal Palace of Almudaina, in Palma.
Martínez has indicated to the media that he took advantage of the meeting to inform the King that in 2029 it will be eight centuries since the conquest of the island by the known as Rei en Jaume, an anniversary for which the City Council is already working on organizing various events.
As is customary, on December 31, the Festa de l'Estendard will take place, considered the oldest civil festival in Europe and with which the entry of Jaume I's troops into the city of Palma is remembered.
"Logically, Your Majesty, who is also King of Mallorca, should be aware of this, which we have already started to prepare for 2029, and proceed to invite him so that he can enjoy and participate in this celebration," the councilor has stated.
Asked by journalists, Martínez did not specify whether Felipe VI has confirmed his presence. "There are two years left and we will do everything possible for him to be there," he pointed out, leaving the monarch's response up in the air.
