EDP, through its subsidiary EDP Renewables APAC, has commissioned a large-scale 44 MWp photovoltaic plant in Fukushima (Japan), integrated into a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Amazon, with which it supports the tech company's goal of achieving net-zero emissions across all its operations by 2040.
As the company detailed in a statement, the solar farm covers approximately 60 hectares following the transformation of an old abandoned golf course. The installation incorporates more than 63,000 photovoltaic modules and has become the largest solar development that EDP has executed in Japan to date.
The complex is already in commercial operation and with high performance. The company has emphasized that during the testing and start-up phases, it exceeded initial electricity generation forecasts. Currently, it presents an availability of over 98%, marking a "solid performance benchmark" above the average parameters of new generation plants.
This is the second PPA signed between EDP and Amazon in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region, following a photovoltaic project in Singapore in 2021. This contract is part of a strategic alliance initiated in 2015 with a wind farm in Ohio that continues to expand. Globally, Amazon has already secured more than 1.4 GW of renewable power through various projects developed by EDP.
The Director of Infrastructure APAC at Amazon Web Services, Cameron Evans, explained that the collaboration with EDP "is fundamental to achieving Amazon's goal of net-zero emissions across all operations by 2040."
"By repurposing a disused golf course as a source of clean energy for the local grid, this project demonstrates how investment in renewable energy can simultaneously drive environmental renewal and community development," he stated.
For his part, the CEO of EDP, Miguel Stilwell d'Andrade, explained that the commissioning of the Fukushima solar project "demonstrates how renewable energies have become a strategic driver for companies and economies."
By combining grid-connected solutions with long-term agreements, such as the one established with Amazon, EDP is "providing resilient and competitive energy solutions," while supporting the transition "towards a fully electrified and sustainable future."
